Heyman beats Meggs for NDP nomination in key riding
Vision Vancouver city councillor Geoff Meggs
George Heyman beat out Vision Vancouver city councillor Geoff Meggs 221-161 on Sunday to win the provincial NDP nomination in Vancouver-Fairview.
It was the first time running for office for Heyman, the current executive director of the Sierra Club BC environmental group and former B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union president.
Earlier in the day, a handful of protesters waved signs outside a city hotel in hopes of derailing Meggs’ campaign. Meggs was first elected to council in 2008.
Michelle Sturino, a member of the Residents Association of Mount Pleasant, said she had no political ties in the nomination fight but believed Meggs sides with developers over the average citizen.
“He has done nothing for Vancouver,” said Sturino.
Meggs didn’t immediately answer requests for an interview.
