Denman cinema owners find new home
Denman cinema owners find new home in Raja Cinema in Vancouver (CARMINE MARINELLI / 24 HOURS)
After shuttering the doors to Denman Cinema a mere three weeks ago, managers of the independent West End theatre have found a new home to light up the screens with movie magic.
Naz and Mike Jamshedian are moving their operations to the Raja Cinema on Kingsway, near Joyce SkyTrain Station in east Vancouver, where they hope to offer modern accoutrements with an “old-time” appeal.
“I like it because it’s very sensual,” Naz said, adding she’s especially excited about the fact they’ll be able to screen the films in a venue offering a balcony.
The couple was forced to leave Denman Cinema after their lease expired Sept. 30 to make way for a dollar store.
Naz said she’ll honour the history of the Raja, which is known for its Hindi films, by screening an Indian blockbuster when the theatre re-opens Nov. 13.
After that, the cinema will screen five movies a day — including kids films, documentaries and mainstream flicks — to appeal to a broad spectrum of movie lovers.
Naz admits it may be difficult to draw the same crowd from the West End to the city’s eastside, but she’s confident Raja’s close proximity to the SkyTrain will bring out a new contingent of fans.
For now, the theatre manager said one of her top priorities is getting patrons to go to facebook.com/DenmanCinema to suggest a new name for the cinema.
