A teenager has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Branson Sanders, whose badly burnt body was found in a bush in Burnaby late last year.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be named due to his age, is also charged with accessory after the fact.
Brandon Nandan and Shakib Shakib were originally charged with second-degree murder in March, nearly four months after Sanders’ body was discovered Dec. 2, 2011.
Their initial charges have now been raised to first-degree murder, while the additional charge of indignity to a dead human body has been added to each.
Although Shakib remains in custody, Nandan is out on bail.
“Homicide investigations are very dynamic in nature and evidence can be gathered for a long period of time after the crime,” homicide Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a statement.
“A homicide investigation does not necessarily end because somebody is in custody. IHIT is dedicated to ensuring that all of the individuals involved are brought to justice.”
