Watch your step! Pedestrians cautioned after grate thefts
Watch your step — metal thieves have been pilfering catch-basin covers from Vancouver’s streets, opening holes in the ground nearly two metres deep.
Police issued the warning after 32 lids were stolen since September. In June, 92 covers were stolen.
“Pedestrians face a new danger when they are walking on dark and rainy sidewalks,” police said in a statement.
“Thieves have stolen so many covers off storm drain basins that pedestrians now risk blindly stepping into a hole up to six feet deep that could result in a broken leg or worst.”
The lids have cost Vancouver more than $19,000 to date.
