Surrey cop breaks leg in New Year's crash 0

Chris Campbell, 24 hours

A Surrey RCMP officer needed surgery to repair a broken leg after his cruiser crashed in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The crash occurred in foggy conditions at the intersection of 72 Avenue and 144 Street at 12:30 a.m.

According to Staff Sgt. Blair McColl, there was a report of a "huge fight" with a possible stabbing and a "number of police officers" were en route.

"I'm not sure exactly what happened but the police car ended up trying to go around a vehicle, or to avoid a vehicle, I should say, and hit a pole."

The traffic unit is investigating, said McColl.

The incident follows the Nov. 13 death of Surrey RCMP Const. Adrian Oliver, who died in a collision with a semi-trailer. Police said the officer had exceeded the speed limit and didn't have his lights or siren activated.
