After declining scholarship offers from 50 top-tier American schools, Surrey native Asianna Covington has signed on to become a discus thrower at the University of Georgia.

The 17-year-old, who takes transit each day from her south Surrey home to school in Vancouver, made it official Wednesday — National Signing Day for U.S. colleges — in a ceremony held at Little Flower Academy.

The track-and-field star told 24 hours last week she wanted to find a school that would fit her laid-back personality while pushing her athletic prowess.
