Many options for healthy, cheap eating in Vancouver
There's plenty of cheap and healthy food available in Vancouver. (CARMINE MARINELLI/ 24 HOURS)
Vancouver — a city known for both its healthy lifestyle and sky-high living cost — doesn’t have to be an impossible place to live for residents who want to eat right on a tight budget, according to a local dietician.
“Sometimes there is this misconception that eating healthy is expensive,” said HealthCastle.com founder Gloria Tsang. She added the misconception often comes from the belief that only organic food is good for you.
“I would definitely choose local first prior to being organic.”
The nutrition expert noted many products sold at farmers markets and local produce shops are cheap and are already grown organically, even if they don’t have the labelling to prove it.
Vancouverites will get the chance to fill their minds with knowledge on healthy living this weekend when the 21st annual Wellness Show hits the city’s convention centre starting Friday.
In the meantime, Tsang recommended hitting up markets either really early or near closing to get the best food deals.
For those who don’t have the chance to hit up a farmers market for local produce, she said chains such as Real Canadian Superstore are good for listing exactly where their food originates.
Furthermore, the city’s ocean setting is also a great boon to healthy-eating penny pinchers, according to Tsang.
“I’m a fish and seafood person, so it’s a paradise living in Vancouver.”
Besides, when it comes to cooking fast, cheap and nutritious, she said nothing beats a dish of brown rice, local veggies and fresh fish.
