TransLink bus driver assaults drop 0

By Michael Mui, 24 Hours Vancouver

The number of assaults on TransLink bus drivers have dropped by a little more than half since 2006.

The transit authority credits the drop to better communications with drivers, cameras on buses, and the monitoring of GPS systems. In 2012, there were 116 assaults on drivers, according to TransLink.

It’s a 52% drop from 242 assaults seven years ago.

“Assaults of any kind on transit operators pose a high risk to the operators and to the public on and off the bus, so we must continue those efforts,” said Peter Arkell, of the Coast Mountain Bus Company, in a statement.

“One assault is too many”

Last year, there were 30 fewer assaults than 2011.
