Sex workers issued rights cards 0

Jeremy Nuttall, 2 hours

So-called “know your rights” cards have been issued to the city’s sex workers by the Downtown Eastside Sex Workers United Against Violence Society in conjunction with the Pivot Legal Society.

The cards come six weeks after a new Vancouver Police Department policy was put into place requiring police to consider sex worker safety over enforcing prostitution laws.

The two organizations said police harassment of sex workers forces them to work in secret, which increases the chance of assault.

A spokesperson for the group said the cards were issued because, despite the new policy, police have been inconsistent with their enforcement and some sex workers have been confused about their rights.
