Talented time with impersonators
You just never know who is going to show up to Paul Anthony’s Talent Time at the Biltmore Cabaret. Last week, it was Patsy Cline and Cher – that was courtesy of local celebrity impersonator Bonnie Kilroe. (Check your local listings for her next show – you’d be “crazy” to miss it.)
And not to be outdone, the host of this jam-packed, variety-style show, Paul Anthony, busted out his Kenny Rogers-Dolly Parton, half-man-half-woman costume for a rousing rendition of Islands in the Stream.
Of course, there’s so much more to this wildly entertaining, awesomely camp show that also happens to be a cable access TV program. Comic hypnotists, ukulele ensembles, senior square dancers – you name it, Anthony’s booked it. You can catch this east Van extravaganza on the first Wednesday of every month. Money, money, money
The glam-slam event of the week had to be the Grape Juice Wine Auction at Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver. In support of Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland, this posh fundraiser was teeming with designer-clad philanthropists buzzing on vino and the fresh smell of status-symbol cars. Throughout the evening, these VIP guests gallivanted around the luxury showroom bidding, chatting and nibbling. And while they certainly made a dent in the spread of cheese and charcuterie, they pretty much stayed clear of the dessert bar. See, that’s the thing with skinny socialites – they’re not so big on high-calorie baked goods. No matter, all the more Nanaimo bars for me! In terms of how much money was raised, it looks like this year’s Grape Juice raked in close to $100,000 for Big Sisters and all the amazing work they do. Well done.
The night was truly inspiring at the Vancity Theatre on March 7. That’s when the members of Women in Film and Television Vancouver presented their Spotlight Award winners. The acceptance speeches were heartfelt, funny and, of course, timely. Which reminds me, happy belated International Women’s Day everyone.
