Macau will be the epicentre of all things Bollywood this weekend as stars and socialites converge on the former Portuguese enclave to celebrate the 14th annual International Indian Film Academy awards. The gathering promises to be magical as the theme of this year’s ceremony is 100 years in Indian cinema.
Since 2000, the IIFA has been focusing the international spotlight on Hindi cinema by taking Bollywood to different places with a strong fan following around the world. From the sunny shores of Singapore to the cosmopolitan streets of Toronto, the academy brings new and emerging talent together in a sequin-studded three day gala of music and dance that culminates in industry’s grandest award ceremony.
“It’s been a phenomenal year for the Hindi film industry. The nominations reflect this,” said Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft International/IIFA. “We also have some incredible performances lined up — it’s going to be something you don’t want to miss.”
Hosted by two of the biggest names in Bollywood — Shahid Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan, the awards will be held at the glitzy Venetian Macao Resort Hotel. This is the second time the awards have been held in the famed gambling mecca just south of Hong Kong.
Audiences can also look forward to a variety of dance routines from an exciting line-up of top-notch performers, including a sequence by Bollywood’s dancing diva Madhuri Dixit, who has mesmerized audiences with her iconic moves for nearly three decades.
The main ceremony will take place Saturday night. The romantic comedy Barfi!, that centers around a deaf and mute man from Darjeeling and his relationship with two very different women, leads the pack with 13 nominations. Other favorites include Vicky Donor, Shoojit Sircar's knee-slapping comedy about a sperm donor, and Karan Johar’s fiery adaption of Agneepath.
With heroes, heroines, song and dance, this year’s IIFA celebration promises to capture the mesmerizing magic of Bollywood in a fun way that anyone can understand and appreciate. Here’s to another 100 years of great cinema.
