Salman Khan just can’t stay out of the news. Fans had barely got their heads around the surprise hug launched on frenemy Shah Rukh Khan when the 47-year-old actor was back in the headlines again.
This time, however, the tone was deadly serious as the Bollywood star was charged with homicide for a hit-and-run incident that took place 10 years ago. With a rep as B-town’s bad-boy, Salman Khan is known for occasionally flaunting the rules. In 2006, he was sentenced to five years in jail for hunting protected deer, while who can forget his highly publicized split with Ashwariya Rai, complete with allegations of harassment?
While Khan walked away from past legal troubles with nary a well-coiffed hair out of place, he may be in more hot water than he can handle this time round.
According to BBC News India, the incident in question took place in September 2002. At the time, Khan allegedly drove his Toyota Land Cruiser into a Mumbai bakery, killing 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan who was sleeping in the streets. Three others were also seriously injured.
He was originally charged with culpable homicide, which was reduced to death by negligence. After lengthy testimony from witnesses between 2006 and 2011, the court reinstated the original charges. If convicted, Khan could face up to 10 years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty.
Khan is one of India’s biggest actors, starring in over 80 films. A self-described “half-Hindu and half Muslim,” he is a well-known philanthropist and the founder of Being Human, which supports education and healthcare for the poor.
As a celebrity trial, feelings are predictably running high. Fans staunchly defend Khan while critics prepare for a crucifixion. Hopefully, the high-profile status of the defendant should not detract from the real issue — a dead man’s justice.
