Vancouver police say they’ve detained a man for allegedly igniting a marine flare in the crowd during a Vancouver Whitecaps game.
Near the end of the Whitecaps’ 2-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes, a 43-year-old man surrounded by fans allegedly ignited the flare and placed it under an empty seat, police said.
As a result, a number of fans suffered breathing difficulties from the flare’s smoke and one woman was taken to hospital.
Security at BC Place put out the flare with fire extinguishers and kept the man in his seat while police were called.
He is facing charges of mischief, criminal negligence and common nuisance.
