A Vancouver Whitecaps’ fan has been handed a lifetime ban from attending future games after he allegedly ignited a marine flare during a match at BC Place this past weekend.
Vancouver police are accusing the 43-year-old man of igniting the flare and throwing it under an empty seat during the ‘Caps 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.
He was arrested and held over the weekend on charges, including common nuisance.
Officials at BC Place praised staff Monday for extinguishing the flare and holding the man while police were called.
PavCo chief operating officer Ken Cretney underlined such projectiles are not welcome in the building.
“The safety of guests is our number one priority at BC Place. This incident was a rare occurrence and our staff responded very quickly,” he said. “BC Place does not tolerate this kind of behaviour.”
