ON THE TOWN
Queer fest a beautiful thing 0
The biggest party last week had to be the opening gala for the 25th Vancouver Queer Film Festival. With more than 70 films from 20 countries, the VQFF is the second-biggest film festival in the city – ergo, a major cause for celebration. As such, everyone seemed in especially high spirits as they filed into the packed FanClub, a friendly, yet somewhat unassuming Granville Street bar that has suddenly become the place for hosting events.
Seeing all those happy, artistic people so free to be who they are and share their stories was a beautiful thing. Now, if only this was allowed in every country, the world would be a better place (Hey President Putin, you picking up what I’m putting down here?). VQFF runs until Aug. 25. Bumper crop bash
Have you noticed how many big, beautiful blueberries there are in your local produce section these days? That’s because B.C. blueberry farmers have had one of their best years yet. To celebrate this bumper crop, the B.C. Blueberry Council threw a small party at the recently opened Fairmont Pacific Rim lobby lounge terrace. The menu, of course, included plenty of berry delicious treats, including B.C. blueberry and white chocolate s'mores, as well as some dangerously tasty blueberry martinis. Naturally, I did my part to honour one of the world’s healthiest foods and help support local growers by drinking more than a couple of these delicious gin cocktails. Yep, think global, drink local – that’s my motto!
Wieners and wine
Liberty Merchant Company was at it again with another fabulous fundraiser last week. The chain of Vancouver wine retailers presented its 12th-annual Bottles & Bangers tasting event at the Vancouver Rowing Club. Guests were treated to wines from the Southern Hemisphere, barbecue sausages and, of course, that stellar view of Coal Harbour. Fittingly, proceeds from this event went to benefitting amateur sports at the VRC. All in all, it was a lovely evening — except maybe next time, smaller buns for the bangers!
