ON THE TOWN
Sun shines on white-clad diners at the annual Diner en Blanc 0
The Diner en Blanc party isn’t exactly “come as you are.” On the contrary, there’s a lot of prepping and preening involved if you want to attend this giant outdoor picnic — for starters, you have to supply your own supper. Then you have to dig through your closet for something white to wear, cart around some fold-up chairs and wait on standby to find out where the secret location is — all this for a little dining al fresco? So is DeB worth the effort? If the weather is co-operating like it was last Thursday, then the answer is absolutely!
This year’s location was just outside of Science World, so it was nice and central. Plus, this breathtaking waterfront scenery served as the perfect backdrop for the sea of beautiful, white-clad diners. In terms of turnout, about 2,500 people participated in this year’s stunning visual feast, which is more than twice as many as in 2012. So, no sign of this smart-mob phenomenon slowing down any time soon.
Furniture, fashion and food
Livingspace did it again. The ultra-chic modern furniture store (at 1st and Pine) hosted its second-annual La Dolce Vita event in support of Emily Carr’s Industrial Design Scholarship. And just like last year, the catering was amazing. In addition to a dessert bar courtesy of Butter bakery, there were two all-you-can-eat food trucks serving up some savoury treats — oh, Tacofino fish taco, how I love thee.
As per usual, organizers did a bang-up job of converting Livingspace’s parking lot into an elegant and warmly lit outdoor lounge. In terms of entertainment, there were a couple of fall 2013 fashion shows featuring clothing that I’m guessing only a small percentage of the population can afford, but hey, it was all for a good cause.
Throngs of professionals lined up for a chance to rub elbows at Vancouver’s third-annual Biggest Ever Networking Party at The Landing in Gastown. Armed with fresh batches of business cards, guests made the rounds in the lobby, as well as the VIP lounge upstairs. It was a schmooze-athon to end all schmooze-athons — and I mean that in a good way.
