Scams target seniors in Coquitlam 0
Mounties in Coquitlam are warning seniors to be vigilant around strangers after a rash of elaborate thefts and scams.
An incident on Aug. 13 had a suspect thanking a 76-year-old woman for giving him directions by placing a necklace around her neck. The victim later discovered her own 24-karat gold necklace had been removed at the same time. Another con on Aug. 22 featured a crying woman in a wheelchair asking for cab fare to get to the hospital. An 85-year-old victim generously parted with a $100 bill, only to watch the suspect — and her money — jump out of the taxi seconds later.
“Prevention is key here,” said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung. “The truth is, even if the bad guys are charged and convicted, you probably won’t get back what was stolen or scammed from you.”
Chung is also asking victims not to feel embarrassed about being conned and to report all crimes to police.
