Painters win when art attacks 0
The live painting movement is nothing new to Vancouver — the quasi-underground scene has been steadily picking up momentum during the last year or two.
What is new, however, is that art patrons are starting to take notice of these incredibly talented artists. They bust out their brushes in a public setting and produce amazing works of art — usually under tight time constraints.
Sometimes it’s for charity, sometimes it’s for an “art battle” title. Either way, this spectator art form is more than worthy of the props it’s been getting of late, and that’s something Kirsten Larsen and Joseph MacKinnon seem to get. The two recently hosted the Vancouver Art Attack event at the Waterfall Building. The concept was to bring these brilliant live painters together with buyers. The artists had less than four hours to “paint their art out” on blank canvases.
In charge of recruiting the talent for this big auction and gala was Bill Higginson, who can often be seen at various charity events and art expos painting masterpieces together with his partner Olga Rybalko. Suffice to say, the finished products that were on display at this elegant soiree were beyond impressive. So congrats to Higginson and company for (once again) shedding a well-deserved spotlight on some of this city’s most gifted artists.
Suds and spontaneity
Got to love that Bob Lenarduzzi. The local soccer legend recently hit the stage, alongside members of the Vancouver TheatreSports League, to help raise money for the league’s youth and educational summer camps, workshops and high school touring. The Laughs on Tap evening at the Improv Centre lounge started out with some complementary appies and beer, courtesy of Granville Island Brewing. Then, guests moved into the theatre, where actor Jackson Davies (think Constable Constable in the Beachcombers) co-hosted a segment entitled Times of Your Life. This is where improvisers re-enacted true stories from Lenarduzzi’s life. And true to form, the president of the Vancouver Whitecaps was a total sport about the whole thing. He was both funny and first class all the way. For information on the next Laughs on Tap event, visit vtsl.com.
