Bollywood’s latest release could well have been entitled Meet the Kapoors. Positioned to become one of Bollywood’s biggest hits, Besharam is the Kapoor’s version of take-your-child-to-work day.
Ranbir Kapoor stars as the vulgar modern-day Robin Hood being pursued by two agents who happen to be his real-life parents — Neetu and Rishi Kapoor.
It should be noted that while Ranbir is currently one of Bollywood’s most bankable names, his father was the baby-faced heartthrob of his day. His mother is also a notable actress who first appeared on screen at age eight. Despite the prolific careers of all three actors, this is the first time they are appearing together on screen.
An excited Ranbir told Reuters he was excited to work with his parents. “It was lovely to see how they are on set, because I had never seen them on set before,” he said. “That was the good part. I got inspired by my father working with him.”
Like a grain of sand in a pearl, Bollywood grew up around the Kapoors. They have been part of the industry for six generations. Perhaps no other family rivals their influence in Hindi cinema.
Ranbir’s great-great grandfather, Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, was the first to dabble in the industry. His son, Prithviraj Kapoor, went on to become a star of silent film.
Prithviraj’s sons, Shammi, Shashi and Raj Kapoor, all became film icons. Raj, in addition, was a hugely successful director. Raj’s sons, Randhir, Rajiv and Rishi Kapoor, continued the family’s acting tradition, as did Rishi’s son Ranbir and Randhir’s daughters — Karisma and Kareena Kapoor.
Although critics have panned the vulgar styling of Beshram, which is Hindi slang for shameless, the Kapoor magic means that despite the gut-wrenching double entendres peppered with liberal dose of crotch grabbing, this film is anything by kaput.
