Hurley brings star power to Vancouver cancer event 0
Nothing like a little star power to shine the spotlight on an important issue. Take Elizabeth Hurley, for example. Whenever she makes an appearance in her role as the global ambassador for the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, people pay attention. Such was the case in a cordoned-off VIP area at the Bay last week. That’s where fans, bloggers and cameramen clamored for the best sightlines, as they eagerly awaited the British beauty’s arrival.
Never one to disappoint in the fashion department, Hurley made her grand entrance in a show-stopping, form-fitting, hot pink lace dress. Then she took to the mic and spoke a few poignant words about why this particular cause is so close to her heart — her beloved grandmother lost her battle with breast cancer back when people didn’t mention the “C” word in public. Afterwards, the gracious model-actress posed for some pics, before heading to her product-signing booth. In short, she came, she conquered, she wore pink.
There certainly was no shortage of caped crusaders at the Renaissance Vancouver Harbourside Hotel last Friday. But these costumed crime fighters weren’t there just to show off their unitards. They were there to support the inaugural Superhero Ball to benefit the BC Children’s Hospital. As decked-out guests entered the party on the 19th-floor revolving rooftop, they were treated to day-glo cocktails, appies and, of course, a superlative view. What else can I say — to see all those classic comic book characters enjoying themselves in one spinning, sky-high room was truly a “Marvel” to behold.
Few fashionistas can resist the call of free booze and beautiful jewelry. That’s probably why there was such a good turnout at the launch for Cavalier: The Fine Jewelry Shoppe. The hip Gastown gathering was abuzz with indie-minded accessory hounds trying on precious gems and sipping complimentary wine. Good times!
