Designer to watch: Calgary-based KaaDiki 0
We love profiling emerging homegrown talent. All too often we have our go-to brands or pop into the mall to find what we need, but there are incredible Canadian designers making a mark on the fashion scene. Meet Haithem Elkadiki, a Libyan-born, Calgary-based menswear designer. After studying at the International Academy of Design in Toronto, he returned to Calgary in 2004 to launch KaaDiki.
KaaDiki is known for the attention to detail in each piece. Sometimes surprising, never boring, we love the bold statements in his trims, buttons, and linings. He incorporates traditional tailoring techniques with contemporary silhouettes to create well-proportioned, fashion-forward looks for both custom clients and retail customers.
Style Guys: If you could sit down with one fashion icon, who would it be and why?
Haithem Elkadiki: Azzedine Alaia. He has been my fashion icon since the day I fell in love with fashion at the age of 12. Alaia always marched to his own beat, often going against the grain. He successfully avoids the fashion “system” and stays relevant.
SG: What got you into fashion and what keeps you there?
HE: My need and desire to bring my dreams to life and my love of creating beauty. What keeps me going and inspired is the love and support I receive from my family, friends, amazing and loyal clients, and my partner.
SG: Name one piece in your next collection that you are most excited about?
HE: The Futuro Jeans: the most time-consuming pair of jeans I have ever created. The front leg of the jeans is sliced into six different sections that are sewed together like a puzzle.
SG: What is your favourite thing you are wearing right now?
HE: My Dirk Bikkembergs underwear (kidding!). I love wearing my black-and-white polka dot Commes Des Garcons shirt with KaaDiki Homme shorts in Bordeaux stretch linen.
SG: Pick one colour all men should wear this season?
SG: What defines a well-dressed man?
HE: His confidence, kindness and respect to others. I believe well-dressed is a state of mind and heart.
