Petition calls on minister to rein in BC Ferry executive pay 0
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has given B.C.’s transportation minister a petition with more than 3,200 signatures demanding the province take measures to rein in executive pay at its ferry corporation.
Jordan Bateman, the federation’s B.C. director, delivered the petition to Transportation Minister Todd Stone late Monday afternoon.
Referring to those who sign as “fed up” with accountability issues with BC Ferry executives the petition makes two demands.
“Make BC Ferries subject to B.C. government rules on executive compensation, bonuses and collective bargaining mandates – starting with an executive pay cut,” read one condition.
The second demanded the executive board report directly to the transportation minister.
Batemen said the petition will give Stone the “ammunition he needs” to “fix this BC Ferries executive pay problem once and for all.”
“The problem with the BC Ferries board is if you give them a way to wiggle off the hook they will,” Bateman said. “The board is refusing to be accountable. We don’t see how they can continue to steward our assets.”
Stone recently gave the ferry corporation’s board an extension to make changes to its executive bonus plan, but didn’t indicate how long the extension was granted.
He initially gave the board 30 days to come up with an acceptable solution.
