Unlike most other Top 24 candidates, Samantha Skelly decided to skip university and start her own business. She has no regrets.
Skelly's niche: combining fitness and life coaching. She advocates a healthy lifestyle based on exercise, nutrition and a determined attitude.
She's also spent time as editor of Vancouver Lifestyles Magazine, started her own fashion company in the United Kingdom and is about to launch a unique beauty industry product she’s designed.
“With life coaching, I want to infuse people with inspiration and determination,” Skelly said. “I connect with my clients on a personal level.
“Life stresses affecting their health, their careers and their relationships often come back to how they're looking after their body ... It's very difficult to make changes in your career if you're not emotionally and physically stable and healthy.”
Although she was formally trained as a fitness instructor, what is Skelly's secret to success without a university degree?
“Interviewing people in the industry and picking brain,” she said, “and basically begging them for Skype and coffee dates!
“This is totally controversial, but I don't believe in post-secondary education unless you're doing it for a particular reason. You can learn so much about the world and industry by being immersed in it and learning from smart people.”
