Richmond City Hall staff have given their support to rezone the iconic Sportstown recreational facility in order to make way for 108 townhomes.
City council is expected to review the staff recommendation on Monday. Currently, Sportstown consists of several indoor tennis courts, a restaurant, a sports shop, and a covered “bubble” area adjacent to the facility that houses a soccer pitch for some 700 players.
Additionally, the Richmond Rod and Gun Club and the Richmond Gymnastics Association also call the 4991 No. 5 Rd. facility home.
The rec facility has been around since 1971. The city’s lease for the complex is expiring in 2016, however, and there’s no option for renewal.
