Suspended Sen. Mike Duffy underwent heart surgery on Tuesday and is recovering in an Ottawa hospital.
The procedure, reportedly an open-heart operation, was performed early in the day at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, senior manager of public affairs for the institute, Vincent Lamontagne said.
"The procedure went well and he is currently in recovery in a stable condition," he said.
Duffy, who was suspended without pay from the Senate last month has had heart problems for years. He had a previous surgery in 2006. He was able to maintain his medical benefits.
In October, Duffy took a medical leave because of his heart condition.
Duffy is currently being investigated by the RCMP for allegedly filing inappropriate housing expense claims and for accepting a $90,000 check from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's former chief of staff Nigel Wright.
No charges have been laid.
