A 16-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon following what police said appears to be a random attack on another man in New Westminster.

On Dec. 17, the brutal attack left the 19-year-old victim in a coma and he is “not expected to survive his injuries,” Sgt. Bari Emam of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a press release early Thursday.

“The apparent motive for this tragic incident was an attempted robbery,” Emam said. “At this point we have no information to suggest that the victim and the suspect were known to each other.”

New Westminster police were called to 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue on Tuesday where they found the badly beaten 19-year-old. The suspect was arrested a short time later.

The suspect is expected to appear at the New Westminster courthouse on Thursday.

The names of the victim and suspect are being withheld and IHIT continues to investigate.
