Connor McDavid’s hard lessons at the world junior continued on Sunday.

Following a difficult outing against the Czech Republic on Saturday, during which he was benched after taking a couple of bad penalties, McDavid found himself in 13th-forward territory during practice.

And as the on-ice workout at Malmo Isstadion ended just after 1 p.m., McDavid was summoned to the side boards by coach Brent Sutter for a chat.

But Sutter was tight-lipped about the meeting, and wouldn’t confirm that Taylor Leier, who wore the same colour sweater (green) as McDavid, would work himself onto a line with Bo Horvat and Sam Reinhart in McDavid’s spot in Canada’s next game, on Monday against Slovakia.

“It’s one game and you guys make a bigger deal out of it than it is,” Sutter said. “(McDavid) played 13 minutes (against the Czechs) and maybe did not have the game that he probably would have liked to have had, but that being said, he is a very important part of this team."
