Hardy souls take frigid dip 0

Thousands showed up to English Bay on New Year’s Day to watch or take part in Vancouver’s annual Polar Bear Swim.

Some dressed in costumes, some stayed in the cold water for several minutes, while most jumped in and raced out just as quickly.

An estimated 2,000 people registered for the event, which was started in 1920 by Peter Pantages. The swim, hosted by the Vancouver Park Board, also included a 100-yard swimming race.
