Daryl Yen is B.C.’s first baby of 2014, born at 12:01 a.m. at Victoria General Hospital.

If he’d been born about a minute later, he would have lost that title.

That’s because Vandermeer Williams was born at 12:02 a.m. at St. Paul’s Hospital. Little Vandermeer, who weighed in at just over seven pounds, will have to settle for the title of Vancouver’s first baby of 2014. He was not available for the media to photograph because he had to be sent to intensive care for observation, according to a representative of Vancouver Coastal Health.

Daryl weighed in at eight pounds, five ounces, and was delivered by C-section. His parents are Daisy Tsai, a piano teacher, and Dr. Jason Yen, a dentist. According to a news release, Daryl’s father “joked” that his new son was named after the TV character Daryl Dixon on the Walking Dead.
