The BC Coroners Service says it is planning a public inquest into the death of two men at a sawmill in Burns Lake in January 2012.

Robert Luggi Jr. and Carl Charlie both died when a fire and explosion destroyed the Babine Forest Products mill.

Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe said that after reviewing other investigations into the case an inquest is in the public’s interest.

Earlier this month, Crown counsel decided not to proceed with criminal or regulatory charges for the explosion.

The BC Coroners Service said an inquest will allow for public presentation of the evidence in the case.

The inquest jury would then have the ability to make recommendations with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
