A Mountie rescued three puppies from the cold Halifax weather and the dispatchers purchased them food, treats and toys.

An officer was on patrol at 10:53 p.m. when he saw the three black puppies huddled together for warmth in the -12C cold and snow.

"The puppies were shivering and dirty as they appeared to be out in the elements for a while," Cpl. Scott MacRae said in a release.

While the puppies were at first frightened, the officer was able to play with them and coax them into his warm cruiser.

The pups were taken to a local detachment "where they were welcomed by other officers who were more than happy to give them some water and some love."

The dogs were then kept at an emergency service centre until a dog shelter opened Wednesday morning.

Police do not know why the puppies were on the road.
