43-year-old man arrested in assault on young Vancouver girls

By David P. Ball, 24 hours Vancouver

A 43-year-old man has been arrested and is facing charges over the alleged assault of two 11-year-old girls at a Vancouver schoolyard over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Vancouver police announced they were recommending charges in the Strathcona Elementary School incident on Sunday, thanks to tips from the community.

In an earlier release seeking witnesses to come forward, police described the suspect as a “Cantonese-speaking Asian man in his 40s with a heavy build.” The attack, according to that statement, occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 2.

The girls “were playing at the park adjacent to Strathcona Elementary School when they were involved in an argument with a man over the ownership of the girls’ backpacks,” a spokesman said. “The argument escalated to the point that both of the girls were allegedly assaulted by the man.

“The girls ran home and told their parents, who then called police.”

Police have not yet released the suspect's name until charges are formally laid.
