Sitting in the stands watching what nearly turned into a Canadian upset was a Canadian embarrassment.
QMI Agency photographer Ben Pelosse snapped this photo of a white fan attending the Canada-Latvia quarterfinal hockey game at the Sochi Olympics wearing blackface and holding a P.K. Subban jersey.
Blackface has historically been used to create a stereotyped caricature of black people. Subban is a Canadian of Jamaican descent.
This isn’t the first time fans of Subban have attended games in blackface. While he was a rookie with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2010, a pair of Montreal Canadiens fans attended a Habs game in blackface wearing Subban shirts.
