The worst avalanche conditions ever seen on the Coquihalla Highway have closed the main road linking Vancouver and Calgary.

The Coquihalla, or Highway 5, is one of the most used arteries in western Canada. The Ministry of Transportation said the road remains closed due to heavy snowfall creating dangerous conditions.

“This current storm cycle on the Coquihalla corridor has resulted in avalanche conditions that have not been seen during the 27 years the highway has been open,” said the ministry in a statement. “Detours are available via Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope or via Highway 8 at Merritt.”

On Thursday afternoon conditions were so bad avalanche control work couldn’t be conducted. The ministry said the work would resume as soon as possible.

Earlier this week an avalanche closed the highway completely.

The ministry advised motorists to check drivebc.ca for updates.
