Vancouver Opera partners with TransLink for special train
All aboard! The Vancouver Opera train car is expected to be rolling along the tracks from now through May with two special gatherings — on March 9 and May 11 — to bring riders to opera performances at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. (FILE PHOTO)
First there was the Love Boat, now there’s the Opera Train.
In an effort to broaden its reach, Vancouver Opera has partnered with TranLink to roll out a specially covered Expo Line train to bring opera fans and regular commuters alike to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on select nights.
VO marketing director Doug Tuck said the plan is to have opera parties aboard the train on March 9 and May 11, when matinee performances of Don Giovanni and Don Carlo, respectively, play at the downtown theatre.
“We’ll be giving out swag … there might be some ‘guerilla opera performance’ on the train,” he said. “We’re trying to … connect with communities right where they live.”
Tuck said TransLink has given the go-ahead to play music on board, but cost-limitations mean any transit performances would be restricted to the two days.
Those attending the performances would get a complementary transit pass for the occasion.
The party begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.
