Victoria isn’t doing enough to protect care workers, the BC NDP said Thursday after it came to light staff at Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre staff had been assaulted by youth at the facility.
BC NDP health critic Judy Darcy said workers at the Burnaby facility have suffered broken bones, head injuries and post-traumatic stress syndrome from violence at the centre.
She said the BC Liberal government had ignored its responsibility, pointing to a claim staff were given panic alarms that was discredited by WorkSafeBC.
“In the last four years the BC Liberals have been ordered to stop breaking health and safety laws at Maples 15 times,” Darcy said.
The centre is the only provincial facility for treating “troubled” youth aged 12 to 17.
Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux said she directed her staff to meet with facility management to address the concerns.
She insisted staff were in fact equipped with personal panic alarms.
