A Frenchman who injured seven people when he tore through a downtown Vancouver apartment complex with knife and hammer early last year has been found not criminally responsible by the courts.

Crown spokesman Neil Mackenzie said Thursday prosecutors agreed with that position and the matter was now in the hands of the BC Review Board.

Jerome Bonneric was arrested and charged following a nightmarish scene on Jan. 31 in an apartment building in the 1200 block of Barclay Street.

Officers in court testified how they couldn’t get inside the building to help even as screams were being heard from the balconies above. When a resident finally handed them a key, they found blood and injured victims throughout the complex, eventually locating Bonneric pinned under a resident.

His lawyer said Bonneric, 33, was suffering a psychotic breakdown at the time and has twice tried to take his own life since being placed in custody.
