Stargazing in Vancouver is apparently more interactive than it is in the rest of the country.

The latest numbers from the Canadian UFO Survey reveal Vancouver reported more unidentified flying objects than any other city in Canada in 2013 at 116 sightings.

British Columbia reported 298 sightings province-wide, coming in second only to Ontario, which had 480 reports last year.

There were 1,180 reports across all of Canada.

Self-described “ufologist” Chris Rutkowski compiles the study with information taken from people who actively study UFOs in Canada. He said the numbers are often related to population.

He said the more people there are in an area, the more likely the chance of a sighting and the reports are then analyzed.

“Every year, there’s a certain percentage that are unexplained, there’s percentages that have possible explanations ... and some that are outright explained,” Rutkowski said. “It’s a matter of looking at the data.”

The number of UFO sightings in Canada peaked at 2,000 in 2012 and Rutkowski said much of that had to do with hysteria over the apocalypse predicted by the Mayan calendar.

“We think that contributed greatly,” he said. “But if you look at the general trend the numbers have been steadily increasing.”

According to the report done with the survey, the data disproves naysayers when it comes to unexplained objects in the sky.

“This data clearly contradicts comments by those who would assert that UFOs are a ‘passing fad’ or that UFO sightings are decreasing.”

After Vancouver, Toronto reported 111 sightings and Winnipeg had the third most at 39.

Since the survey started in 1989, B.C. has had 3,770 reports of UFOs.
