Gupta named new UBC president
The University of B.C. appointed Dr. Arvind Gupta as its new president and vice chancellor Wednesday.
The University of B.C. appointed Dr. Arvind Gupta as its new president and vice chancellor Wednesday, replacing the outgoing Stephen Toope.
Gupta, an expert in research and innovation policy who is a professor of computer science at the school, was selected through a recommendation made by a 22-member committee encompassing faculty, staff, alumni, board members and others.
“As a member of the UBC community, I know how great a responsibility and honour this is,” said Gupta in a written statement. “I have the privilege of taking the baton from Professor Toope who has guided UBC to a strong position.”
B.C. Minister of Advanced Education Amrik Virk welcomed the new president and praised his academic credentials.
Gupta, the 13th president and vice chancellor of the university, begins his new role July 1 for a five-year term.
