A $2,695-family trip to Disneyland has drawn BC New Democrat MLA Jenny Kwan into the fiscal crisis engulfing the Portland Hotel Society.
In a statement Thursday, Kwan said her estranged husband, PHS director Dan Small, told her he had “paid out of his pocket” for her part in a 2012 trip, which emerged in an audit of the Insite operator's finances.
She called on him to repay it. “If he doesn’t, then I will,” Kwan said.
The news comes after two separate audits suggested the Downtown Eastside nonprofit misspent millions.
“It’s a mess quite honestly,” Health Minister Terry Lake said. “We’re talking into the millions of dollars that are questionable or unsubstantiated.”
The audits found unsupported spending, including out-of-country travel, misuse of corporate credit cards, missing receipts and unusual payments.
PHS is now being run by an interim board after executive director Mark Townsend, Small and others resigned.
