WINNIPEG — Two Alaskan Malamutes that mauled and killed Gracie Ana Elizabeth Herntier, 7, have been euthanized.
Mother Jacklyn Herntier said Gracie had known the dogs since she was an infant and the dogs belonged to close family friends of Gracie's grandparents.
An email sent Friday from Dan Fryer, the RM of Springfield's animal control officer, said the decision was made after receiving input from the RCMP and regional health authority.
"As such, the dogs have been humanely euthanized and samples will be sent for rabies testing," he wrote.
Gracie was mauled to death by the two Alaskan Malamutes while at a family friend's home last Sunday afternoon in the RM of Springfield.
The two dogs had been in custody of animal control officials following Sunday's tragedy.
A spokeswoman for the RCMP said they are still investigating the death but had informed authorities Thursday that the dogs were no longer needed for the investigation.
The funeral for Gracie is being held on Saturday.
