Surrey RCMP is putting its bicycle squad back together to target Newton-area crime after its disbanding years ago due to a lack of resources.

Cpl. Bert Paquet said the last time Surrey Mounties had a contingent of full-time bike officers was in the mid-2000s, but priorities shifted when more general duty officers were needed.

He said services wouldn’t be affected by diverting resources to the six-member team since the money needed would be taken out of the overall operating budget.

“The vast majority of officers seconded to the bike squad will come from different sections who are already dedicated to disrupting criminal activities and targeting property related offences and individuals,” Paquet said.

Police said the officers would operate by keeping their ears to the ground and their work would be “self-generated” based on what they pick up on the street.
