The provincial Ministry of Transportation has handed more authority to the mayors of Metro Vancouver when it comes to running TransLink.
Legislation passed Thursday gives mayors the ability to approve long-term plans for the transportation authority, as well as approving fare increases or sales of assets.
The mayors will now oversee the salaries of TransLink’s board of directors.
But the government will add two provincial appointees to the TransLink board.
Minister of Transportation Todd Stone has given the mayors until late June to develop a vision for regional transportation.
The new powers come after mayors around Metro Vancouver complained of limited influence over how transit is run.
