The province’s automobile insurer is now withholding licence and insurance renewals for anyone with an unpaid transit ticket from 2002 to 2012.

ICBC spokesman Adam Grossman said on Wednesday 37,000 tickets remain unpaid in the time before legislation was changed in 2012 to give TransLink the power to collect fines.

The amount of unpaid tickets is worth about $5.7 million.

Grossman said ICBC began calling drivers who have insurance or licence renewals coming up at the beginning of March and have started refusing renewals at the end of the month.
