A man convicted of killing his wife and burning her body in Delta has been ordered to pay more than $600,000 in compensation to the family and guardian fees.

Mukhtiar Singh Panghali was convicted of murdering Manjit Kaur Panghali in 2006. At the time of Panghali’s death, she was expecting the couple’s second child.

The two were both teachers.

After the murder, he burned her body in an attempt to cover up the evidence.

In February 2011, Panghali was convicted of second-degree murder and handed a life sentence with no parole for 15 years.

The judge awarded the money for loss of dependency, future loss of dependency and future loss of household assistance and child care, among other reasons.

The action was brought to trial by family members on behalf of Manjit Panghali’s daughter, Maya.

The 10-year-old has been in the custody of her aunt since 2007.
