Surrey RCMP say crime stats show a drop in violent crime in the city for the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

At the beginning of 2013, 1,519 violent crimes were reported in the city while only 1,370 were reported this year.

“In other words, there were 10% fewer investigations undertaken by the police,” said the RCMP in a release. “Over the course of the past 12 months, 173 of the reported violent crimes from the first quarter in 2013 were either reclassified or found to be unsubstantiated.”

Sexual assaults also decreased from 64 to 57, and over last year 11 such assaults were found to be unsubstantiated or reclassified.
