B.C. agrees to replace New West and Coquitlam bridge

The province has agreed to supply a temporary replacement for a derelict bailey bridge that connects New Westminster and Coquitlam — with strings attached.

The Ministry of Transportation said it will replace the bridge with a temporary one-lane structure that New Westminster will be responsible for installing and maintaining. But the loaner bridge is conditional on New Westminster’s agreement that a second temporary single-lane bridge also be installed at the site for “critical two-way traffic flow,” said a letter from Transportation Minister Todd Stone.

The bridge has been an issue for some time and reached its zenith when it was closed earlier this year after a structural inspection.

New Westminster and Coquitlam are joined by the span and local politicians were concerned it cut off a quick route to Royal Columbian Hospital.
