Acquittal of ex-Conservative MP’s agent overturned
The official agent of three-term former Conservative MP Jim Abbott could be tried again on two Canada Election Act charges — related to allegedly failing to dispose of surplus electoral funds in 2006 and filing a false return in 2008.
That was a decision of the B.C. Supreme Court on a Crown appeal that successfully overturned Harvey Venier’s previous acquittal of the charges.
The court pointed out that none of the charges involved any “financial impropriety” but rather had to do with failing to “comply with various accounting procedures that the act requires for reporting, accountability and transparency purposes” during the 39th and 40th federal general elections.
