Movie quotes cover Vancouver art gallery

 Sara Norman, 24 hours

The Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery on Nelson Street at Richards isn't under construction and hasn't been the victim of vandals, despite the fact the exterior façade is completely boarded up.

The word-covered wood is actually part of an art installment by Mexican artist Stefan Bruggemann, titled "Headlines and Last Lines in the Movies."

Written in black and red text are quotes from the last lines of famous Oscar winning movies like Citizen Cane, as well as the more recent Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyer's Club.

Among those quotes are headlines from global newspapers Bruggemann read while painting the mural, some including local stories like "Enbridge Pipeline Rejected."

Bruggemann painstakingly painted every word on the canvas while he was at the CAG from June 9 to 12.

The gallery said since then, people have made a game of trying to identify the quotes from the movies.

Bruggemann's work, meant to look like a construction site, has been exhibited around the world, but here in Vancouver the gallery said it brings up memories of boarded-up windows in downtown shops following the Stanley Cup riot in 2011.

The exhibit, which extends into the gallery, will be on display until September 17.
