It’s official: Willie Desjardins is the new head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

Desjardins, fresh off guiding the AHL’s Texas Stars to a Calder Cup championship, was previously an associate coach for Dallas from 2010-12. He replaces John Tortorella, who was fired in May after one year when the club missed the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“Willie Desjardins has won at every level and we believe he’ll be an excellent fit as we strive to return to the playoffs and build with youth for long-term success,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning said.

Desjardins described his coaching philosophy as firm yet malleable.

“I want us to play hard every night, I want us to play hard every shift,” Desjardins told the Canucks website. “Every time we play, we play to win; we go out, we’re looking for a way and maybe it has to be a little different every night, the opposition is different, but we’ll have an underlying theme that we’re here to play, we’re here to win and that’s how we’re going to approach every game.”

ONE MORE YEAR

Daniel Alfredsson wants one final crack at winning the Stanley Cup.

The 41-year-old winger told the Detroit Red Wings he wants to play one more season, according to the Detroit Free Press. The two sides will meet later this week.

Alfredsson joined the Red Wings last summer on a one-year contract after 17 seasons with the Ottawa Senators. He scored 18 goals and added 31 assists in 68 games wearing the winged wheel, tied for the team lead with defenceman Niklas Kronwall.

NAME CHANGE

The Phoenix Coyotes will officially become the Arizona Coyotes at the NHL draft Friday when the team makes the No. 12 overall selection.

The franchise has been the Phoenix Coyotes since relocating from Winnipeg in 1996. The new ownership group, however, the new ownership group wants a more inclusive name for the state of Arizona.

IceArizona bought the team a year ago after four years of being operated by the league.

The team’s uniforms will have a new shoulder patch and the lettering in the team logo will change next season.

BRIEFLY

After scoring a career-high 20 goals last season, the Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Brayden Schenn to a two-year contract reportedly worth $5 million Monday ... Curtis McElhinney will once again play gatekeeper for the Columbus Blue Jackets next season after the club signed the backup goalie to a one-year extension.
